It was there I washed all my troubles away

Where the rain came down every hour of the day

There lived a hermit on the mountain so high

He bathed himself every tenth of July

The fish in the river rolled over to die

We sent a policeman to get on his trail

But when he came back he was tattered and pale

With a pitchfork behind like a long wooden tail

As I was out walking by the river one day

The minister's daughter came walking my way

She said, Let's go lie down in the hay

In the field of the willows so gay



So into the dark of the barn we did creep

But it wasn't the lady who sang me to sleep

It was seventeen horses, two cows and a sheep

I spied an old man looking awfully queer

He was under a tree with a bottle of beer

When I got there he'd been dead for a year

In the field of the willows so gay



Well to leave him unburied I thought was a sin

But I was too lazy a grave to begin

So I put on my boots and I trampled him in-
